Cartoon Cereal Commercials | 1960's | Black and White TV Ads
Ten Minute Time Machine - Cartoon Cereal Commercials
Kids, cartoons and cereal have gone together for generations. Remember getting up on a Saturday morning, warming up the ol' television set, pouring a bowl of cereal, and settling-in to enjoy the best time of the week for being a kid? Most of the commercials were simply an extension of what we were watching on tv-- Bugs Bunny, Daffy Ducky, Yogi, Top Cat. Then, the cereal companies created their own cartoon characters to represent the sugary goodness-- Sugar Bear, Snap Crackle Pop, Toucan Sam...and so many others.

I remember the early '70s. The malls were full, never any empty slots. The decor was a little tacky, especially the plastic plants. Mom would drop us off at the Saturday matinee to watch old Sinbad movies, Willy Wonka and Sound of Music for the 25th time. It cost 50 cents a ticket. It was safe to be there without her, even though we were 12, 11, 9, 7 and 4. She would go to Sears, the Amazon/everything store in those days. Life wasn't perfect. Every generation has its problems, but we still had fun.

One of the things that I really really don't like is, I listen to these videos while I work and I miss out on the ultra cool images of malls. When I stop and watch the images, it takes me back to my youth. Malls used to look like this. They spent more money on the interiors and making them look impressive.

My mom shopped at Lerners and we had chocolate malt shakes and cheeseburgers at Woolworths counter. I got my shoes at Thom McKan and holiday cards at the Card Cage. Birthday celebration at Ferrell’s. Anyone remember the Record shop and bookstores, Mr. Rag’s and Oaktree?? The fountains always smelled like chlorine and the planters were mostly filled with plastic flowers and tropical leaves. Everything was orange/ brown/ green and people kinda dressed up to go out in public. Sears was on one end of the mall while JCPenny was on the other. It was a long walk through the mall to find the best deals on underwear. The music takes me back to the good ole days. You know you are from this time if you still remember the smell of leaded gasoline in every car.
